History
Cohiba is Habanos’ flagship brand. It was made in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself at the now-famous El Laguito factory. This cigar was previously only seen outside of Cuba as a gift to visiting diplomats.
However, Cohiba has been available to the general public in three sizes since 1982: Panetela, Corona Especial, and Lancero. The Robusto, Exquisito, and Espléndido were added in 1989; the six are known as the Lnea Clásica (classic line). The Robusto was the thickest size in Cohiba’s portfolio in 1989.
Over the last ten years, Cohiba Robusto cigars have been the fastest growing trend in the handmade sector. They are the standard against which all other cigars are measured.
Tasting notes
The Cohiba Robustos is known for its bold flavor, which has been described as “loosely sharp and woody with a sweet yet spicy tinge in the middle and final third.” The wrapper has an oily luster, and the pre-light aroma is sour and nutty, reminiscent of almonds and hazelnuts. Because of its powerful flavor notes, many people describe this cigar as a sophisticated smoke.
